?Values are the foundation of everything we do. This are the principles and beliefs that guide your choices and shape your behavior. This can be seen as the guiding principles that define who we are and what we stand for. I’ve always been curious about my own values, and I recently embarked on a journey of self-discovery to uncover what’s most important to me. Here’s what I learned along the way!

What are values?

Values are beliefs that we hold about what is important, desirable, and worthwhile. This are the standards that we use to judge your own behavior, and the behavior of others. This are what motivates us to take action and to pursue your goals. Values are often deeply rooted and can be difficult to identify, but this are essential in helping us make decisions and live according to your priorities.

Values can be divided into two main categories: intrinsic values and extrinsic values. Intrinsic values are those that are internal and reflect your personal beliefs and desires. These values are often related to self-fulfillment, such as a sense of purpose, joy, or peace. Extrinsic values are external, and typically involve material items or achievements. Examples of extrinsic values include money, power, and fame.

Why it?s important to uncover your true values

It’s important to take the time to uncover your true values because this serves as a compass for your life. Knowing what you value will help you make decisions and take actions that are in line with your priorities. It will also help you identify what’s truly important to you, and what you can let go of.

Identifying your values can also help you stay motivated and focused, as you’ll always have a clear goal to strive towards. It can also help you stay true to yourself and avoid making decisions based on others’ expectations or desires. Finally, understanding your values can help you develop a greater sense of self-awareness, allowing you to better understand yourself and how you relate to the world around you.

Understanding Values

Start by understanding your core beliefs

The first step in uncovering your true values is understanding your core beliefs. Core beliefs are deeply-held beliefs about yourself, the world, and your place in it. These are often shaped by your experiences and can be difficult to identify. To start uncovering your core beliefs, ask yourself questions like:

? What do I believe in?
? What are my fundamental beliefs about life?
? What do I consider to be good and bad?
? What do I believe to be true?

These questions can help you get started in understanding your core beliefs and uncovering your true values.

Identifying your values

Once you’ve identified your core beliefs, it’s time to start identifying your values. To accomplish this, ask yourself the following:

? What do I prioritize in life?
? What do I strive for?
? What would make me happiest?
? What do I want my life to be about?
? What do I stand for?

These questions can help you identify the things that are most important to you, and will form the basis of your list of values.

Creating your list of values

Once you’ve identified your values, it’s time to create your list of values. This list should include all the values that you consider important, whether this are intrinsic or extrinsic. Start by writing down all the values that come to mind, without judging or evaluating them.

Once you have your list, take some time to reflect on each value and how it aligns with your core beliefs. This will help you refine your list and make sure it’s in line with your true priorities.

Looking at examples of values

If you’re having trouble coming up with your own list of values, you can look at examples of values to get some inspiration.

There are many different values that individuals can hold, and different people may value different things. Some common examples of values include:

  1. Honesty: Being truthful and transparent in all interactions and communications.
  2. Integrity: Being consistent and ethical in one’s actions.
  3. Respect: Treating others with dignity and courtesy.
  4. Fairness: Acting in a just and impartial manner.
  5. Loyalty: Being committed to the well-being of others, especially those in one’s community or family.
  6. Empathy: Being able to understand and share the feelings of others.
  7. Responsibility: Being accountable for one’s actions and taking ownership of one’s decisions.
  8. Family: Prioritizing the well-being and happiness of one’s family.
  9. Creativity: Encouraging and fostering new ideas and ways of thinking.
  10. Adventure: Being open to new experiences and taking risks.
  11. Health: Prioritizing physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
  12. Learning: Being curious and open to new knowledge and personal growth.
  13. Community: Being committed to improving the well-being of one’s community.
  14. Financial stability: Managing money responsibly and being financially secure.
  15. Environment: Being mindful of the impact of one’s actions on the environment.

It’s worth noting that some values can be considered more general and some more specific. Some values can also be considered as a goal, for example: Success, Ambition, Independence.

Keep in mind that this is not an exhaustive list and there are many other values that individuals can hold.

Refining and prioritizing your values

Once you have your list of values, it’s time to refine and prioritize them. Start by eliminating any values that don’t align with your core beliefs. Then, take a look at your remaining values and decide which ones are the most important to you. These will become your top values, and should be the ones that guide your decisions and actions.

How to live according to your values

Once you’ve identified and prioritized your values, it’s important to make sure you’re living according to them. To do this, take some time to evaluate your current habits and behaviors. Are these in line with your values? If not, what changes can you make to align them?

For example, if one of your values is honesty, you may need to be more open and honest with yourself and others. If one of your values is compassion, you may need to practice more empathy and understanding. This evaluation process can help you ensure that you’re living according to your values.

How to stay true to your values

Staying true to your values can be difficult, especially when faced with difficult decisions or challenging situations. To stay true to your values, it’s important to be mindful of them and to make sure that you’re making decisions that are in line with them.

It can also help to have reminders of your values around you. For example, you can write them down and post them somewhere visible, or create a mental or physical reminder that you can refer to when making decisions. This can help you stay focused and true to your values.

Identifying Your Values

Methods for identifying personal values

  1. Self-reflection: Take some time to think about your beliefs and what is important to you. Write down your thoughts and feelings about different aspects of your life, such as your relationships, career, and personal growth.
  2. Journaling: Keeping a journal can help you identify patterns in your thoughts and emotions, which can reveal your values.
  3. Mind-mapping: Create a visual representation of your thoughts by drawing a map of your ideas. Connect related ideas and see which themes emerge.
  4. Value assessment tests: There are various online assessments and surveys that can help you identify your values. These tests can be a good starting point, but should be used in conjunction with self-reflection.
  5. Consult with others: Talk to people you trust, such as friends and family, about what you believe are your core values. They may have a different perspective on what is important to you.
  6. Observe your actions: Look at what you do, not just what you say, to get a sense of what you truly value. Your actions often reveal your values more than your words do.

It’s important to remember that personal values may change over time, so it’s a good idea to revisit this process regularly.

The impact of living in alignment with values

Living in alignment with your values can have a positive impact on various aspects of your life. Some of the benefits include:

  1. Increased self-awareness: Knowing your values helps you understand yourself better and makes it easier to make decisions that are in line with your beliefs and goals.
  2. Greater satisfaction and fulfillment: When you live in alignment with your values, you are more likely to feel that your life has purpose and meaning.
  3. Stronger relationships: Being true to your values can help you build deeper, more authentic connections with others. It can also help you identify and let go of relationships that are not in line with your values.
  4. Better decision making: When you are clear about your values, it is easier to make decisions that are in line with what you believe is important, leading to less regret and more confidence.
  5. Greater resilience: Having a strong sense of purpose and meaning can help you cope better with the challenges of life.
  6. Increased motivation: When you are living in alignment with your values, you are more likely to be motivated and engaged in what you are doing.

It’s worth noting that there’s a difference between aligning with your values and aligning with your wants/desires. Even when you align with your values, you may still face difficult situations and may not always get what you want. But aligning with your values can give you a sense of direction and fulfillment that can help you navigate through these situations.

Tips for aligning actions with values

  1. Be clear about your values: Write down your values and keep them in a visible place. Review them regularly to ensure that you are still in alignment with them.
  2. Prioritize your values: Not all values are equal. Identify which values are most important to you and make sure that you are giving them priority in your life.
  3. Set goals in alignment with your values: When you set goals that align with your values, you are more likely to be motivated to achieve them.
  4. Incorporate your values into your daily routine: Find small ways to live in alignment with your values each day. For example, if one of your values is to be more environmentally friendly, you can start recycling or using public transportation.
  5. Surround yourself with like-minded people: Spend time with people who share your values. This can provide support and help you stay accountable.
  6. Be mindful of your choices: Be aware of the choices you make, and how this aligns with your values. Take responsibility for your actions and make adjustments as needed.
  7. Be open to change: Remember that your values may change over time. Be open to re-evaluating and adjusting your values and actions as needed.
  8. Practice self-compassion: It’s easy to be hard on yourself when you make a choice that doesn’t align with your values. Remember that no one is perfect and try to be gentle with yourself as you work towards living in alignment with your values.
